I was quite excited about this guitar - mahogany body, set neck, lightning bridge and P90 pickup for under £100. At the time of purchase, the Harley Benton equivalent was £175 and the Epiphone £325, so it seemed a real bargain. Initial impressions were good - it looks great (the metallic paint really sparkles under bright light) and it feels comfortable to hold. On close inspection, however, I can identify several minor flaws - it's clear that this instrument wasn't made with a great deal of care and attention. That said, the fret edges are well polished and there is no roughness at all.
Out of the box, the setup was terrible. It needed quite a bit of tinkering with the bridge height and truss rod to get decent playability. Even so, I can't get rid of an annoying buzz on the 7th fret of the "D" string (unless I play really light). I'm pretty certain that it needs a fret level, but my local tech charges £80 for this which is too prohibitive for a budget instrument.
In terms of sound, the sustain is really good. The pickup is incredibly clear, especially at the high end, though the output is a bit lower than I expected. Despite playing for 38 years years, I'd never used P90s before (peer opinion was always rather dismissive) but I have to admit I really like the clarity. My other guitars now sound rather muddy and bottom heavy in comparison.
The biggest problem for me was the tuning stability which was awful. Replacing the factory strings with Rotosound Yellows solved 80% of the issue, while replacing the badly-cut plastic nut with a graphite one largely resolved the matter.
Another problem I had was with the tone control. Initially, it only kicked in right at the very bottom of the dial, and even then the knob had a tendency to spring back. After two days, it broke (spinning around full circle with no stops at 0 and 10) but thankfully I was able to fix this myself.
Overall, I think this product should really be viewed as a kit guitar that has been assembled for you. The basics are there but it still needs quite a bit of work. If you can do this yourself, then it's pretty good value. If not, I'd recommend the alternatives mentioned earlier in my review.
