In 2019, ASM dropped the Hydrasynth and the world became a happier place. This versatile synthesizer came wrapped in an impressive housing decked out with a clear and tactile set of controls. A more compact desktop edition followed soon after, but the only thing missing was the convenience of a keyboard loaded with polyphonic aftertouch - at least, if that's what you're into. Offering a tasty middle-ground between the two, ASM introduce the Hydrasynth Explorer: a stripped back rendition of the full-sized Hydrasynth but loaded with a medium-sized set of keys - complete with polyphonic aftertouch.
The ASM Hydrasynth Explorer
The full-sized Hydrasynth was, and still is, an undeniable beast of a synthesizer. While there are synths that you can master in the space of a Sunday afternoon, the Hydrasynth isn't one of them. The mass of options that it has on offer doesn't just present users with an immense sonic palette but a mass of potential when it comes to nuance - definitely a worthy chunk of gear for serious and experienced sound designers. What the Hydrasynth Explorer offers is that same level of potential, just neatly crammed inside a more compact and portable housing that can even run on batteries.

Een lekker compacte digitale synthesizer met een groot geluid. De mini keys voelen kwalitatief goed aan en de poly after touch is een leuke toevoeging. De interface is gemakkelijk te begrijpen en de meer ervaren synthesist zal niet voor veel verrassingen komen staan.
De geluiden gaan over het hele spectrum en klinken van af en toe hard en schel digitaal, naar ingetogen en beheerst en (bijna)niet te onderscheiden van analoog. Kortom, een veelzijdig inzetbare synth met een fantastisch geluid, een fijn te bespelen keybed en een kleine voetprint.
Bijzonder fijne synth met eindeloos veel geluids mogelijkheden in een goed doordachte interface !
Het grote voordeel van de ASM Hydrasynth Explorer is eigenlijk dat hij voor nog geen 600 Euro meer dan compleet is. Niet alleen de uitgebreide en toegankelijke geluidssynthese maar ook de vele musical scales (toonsoorten) maken hem voor beginnende- en ervaren muzikanten interessant. Vooral het feit dat tevens de bij de toonsoorten behorende akkoorden perfect worden ondersteund maken hem zo goed als onmisbaar. Zijn van huis uit min of meer synthetische, moderne geluiden is aanvankelijk even wennen maar de synthese biedt gelukkig meer dan voldoende parameters om deze makkelijk en snel binnen zeer ruime grenzen te corrigeren. Tenslotte wil ik nog graag de uitstekende polyfone aftertouch noemen die een zeer expressief spel mogelijk maakt. Al met al een grandioos instrument dat niet snel verveelt.

Can't recommend this synth enough. 3 osc, 2 of 8 part wavetable, and one that just plays a single wave. No sequencer. You use the 5 step LFO to make rhythmic patches. You have a 32 way comprehensive mod matrix. Has great analoguing functions that actually work, and nice 4 way effects too. We made dozens of patches for this synth, it's a joy to make presets with the simple workflow. It can make anything from acid rhythms to soundtracks, to emotive leads and pads. A few things could be added on a future firmware update, but it's already a great synth, with its poly aftertouch and ratchet arp. Definitely recommended, but only if you want synthetic instruments of real quality, it doesn't do sampled pianos and strings etc
