The Jack Casady Fretless Bass: Semi-Hollow, Full Sound

The lion's share of the tone this guitar is able to produce is provided by the semi-hollow, fully-maple body. While the construction adds airiness, the use of maple balances things out with characteristic shimmer and sparkle and the mahogany neck brings the definition and warmth. When compared to most standard semi-acoustic basses, this fretless model bears a relatively standard 34 inch scale length, so that uniquely, you're getting a kind of solid-body-bass sound feel from a genuine hollow-body.

Jack's ultimate sound is delivered by a single, very special pickup mounted in the middle: the JCB-1. This low-impedance humbucker guarantees natural tone wiped clean of any hum or distortion, and using the fitted Varitone switch, the elastic nature of this pickup can be further opened up and tweaked to fit pretty much any playing style.
