A big set configured to support big sound, this Mapex Saturn Evolution five-piece includes a kick drum, two hanging toms and not one, but a team of two floor toms. Each shell has a hybrid birch and walnut wood construction, resulting in a unique sound that blends the explosive response of birch with the more dry and defined sound of walnut. This heady sonic mix is supported by Mapex's own Chamber Specific Design, where each shell has a unique design that's specific to its size and build, ensuring the best possible sound.

To complete the ideal all-round kit, this set includes a 22 inch by 18 inch kick, a 10 inch by 8 inch and 12 inch by 8 inch tom, and a 14 inch by 14 inch and 16 inch by 16 inch floor tom. The bass drum has a 'virgin' design, meaning that it makes zero contact with the rest of the kit, resulting in thick, punching kick sound backed up by plenty of attack. And, since the hanging toms have a stand-mounted design, they're removed from the kick drum completely, resonate more freely and limit the chance of crosstalk. Both the hanging toms and floor toms have also been finished with rounded 45° SONIClear bearing edges while the bass drum features a 60° SONIClear bearing edge.

The Mapex SONIClear Attenuation System

The SONIClear system has been around for a while and has undergone a recent update. 'SONIClear' literally refers to an array of sound enhancing concepts and designs, which includes the renowned SOS system and the all-new HALO tom mounting system. This innovative system slots a supporting arm around the tom shell and under the lugs, improving the tension distribution around the shell so that it hangs more freely, allowing the wood to both breathe and sing. If the resonance is a little too much for your setup, it can be easily tweaked via the fitted tension adjustment knob to tighten up the response or make the sound a bit more open, giving you a fully customised tom response.
