Levante offers a number of brass instruments at an attractive price. This cornet is one such affordable instrument that provides all of the features you’d expect from a good entry-level model. It’s tuned in the key of Bb and features an attractive silver finish. It also comes with a soft case so you can keep your investment protected and transport it safely.

Levante CR5201 Bb cornet

Your cornet’s piston valves are vital to the instrument, and as such, it’s important to always keep them in the best condition possible so they don’t start sticking. This particular cornet is equipped with Monel piston valves. Monel is an alloy consisting of 65% nickel and about 30% copper, and it comes with the major advantage that it’s insensitive to corrosion. The piston valves are also easy to clean and require very little maintenance. Another important part of the instrument is the leadpipe, which in this case is made of gold brass, while the slides are made of nickel silver. You’ll find a first slide saddle and a third slide finger ringer that you can use to adjust the tuning of the instrument. There’s also a tuning slide and two water keys, the latter of which allow you to release condensation from the instrument to keep it sounding and playing as it should. With an 11.65mm bore and a 124.5mm bell, this instrument is very well suited for beginners.

Shepherd's Crook style

One of the most recognisable features of this cornet is the slide that curves toward the bell from behind the valves (see picture 2). This is called a Shepherd’s Crook, and is known for providing a mellower sound. English brass bands traditionally have short-model cornets with Shepherd’s Crooks, whereas bands in the US typically have cornets without Shepherd’s Crooks that look and sound more like trumpets.
