The Orion series is Mapex's flagship line of drums. Every drum in this series lives up to the highest standards and has plenty of high-end features that help it create the best sound possible. This Mapex Orion tom is made of seven plies of maple with one outer ply of beautiful burl maple, and it is 6.l mm thick. Maple has been used to make drums for ages now, because it produces such a beautiful, full and warm sound.

This 8 x 7-inch tom is fitted with black chrome hardware, such as 2.3mm steel Mapex Powerhoops and special lugs that make minimal contact with the shell. These single-point-of-contact lugs, as Mapex calls them, improve the shell's resonance, enhancing its sound. Furthermore, the tom is fitted with Mapex's Isolated Tom Mounting System, which allows the toms to resonate freely, containing the vibrations within the tom itself. This further enhances the sound and gives the drum a bit more sustain.

Finally, the beautiful finish is worth mentioning. All lacquer finishes in the Orion series consist of eight coats of hand-applied deep gloss lacquer, and the Cosmic Cloud Burst finish gives this tom a sleek, almost futuristic appeal that is complemented by the black chrome hardware.
