About the ukulele

Portuguese immigrants from Madeira were actually responsible for bringing the ukulele's predecessor - the machete - to the islands, where it would become the instrument we know and love today. Its smaller size (compared to a classical guitar) is understandably responsible for the smaller, distinctive ukulele sound that really cuts through the mix.
