The Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt: Tight & Trusted
In 2011, the Sennheiser MD 421 microphone was awarded a coveted spot in the TEC Hall of Fame. This renowned dynamic microphone was first introduced in 1960 and has been considered one of the most adaptable and flexible microphones of all time. Now, Sennheiser drop an extra-tight and manageable edition: the MD 421 Kompakt.
The Bite-Size Sennheiser MD 421
The Sennheiser MD 421 Kompakt can go to the places where the original MD 421 II simply couldn't. At just 12 centimetres long, the Kompakt edition is far shorter than the older models, making it much easier to work into awkward spots and position exactly where it's needed. This new-breed MD 421 can also be set up to amplify live drums and, with that aim in mind, there's even a version available complete with a purpose-designed MZH Drums clip.
Smaller? How?
You might be asking yourself if a smaller microphone body means a compromise on sound quality, simply because there's less space inside for all those specialised internal components. In fact, only one of the original features has been omitted: the bass roll-off switch. But because modern digital recording methods have made the switch pretty much irrelevant, it's unlikely to be missed. Also, the longer housing of the vintage MD 421 was initially designed to slot comfortably into the hand of reporters and vocalists, so most of it was actually just empty. With this slimmed down model, you're basically looking at a microphone that's been better optimised for miking up drums, guitar amplifiers and wind instruments. Of course, if you want one for vocals, there's always the standard MD 421 II, which is unlikely to disappear any time soon.
