The Fender American Special Stratocaster is the most affordable way to own a real 'Made in the USA' Fender, and not because they've saved on materials or hardware. In fact the opposite is true. The modest price is the result of efficient manufacturing methods and a relatively high production rate. The Stratocaster HSS in Olympic White has a body of the same quality alderwood as any other Fender model. The HSS configuration is made up of two Texas Special single-coil pickups and the Fender 5 Atomic Humbucker. But let's not forget about the look! Its white body, rosewood fretboard, large '70s headstock and black pickguard make for one good-looking instrument.
Construction of the American Special Stratocaster in Olympic White
As mentioned before, the body of this American Special Stratocaster is made of alder, a type of wood that is used in high-quality strats and loved for its low, balanced sound and excellent resonance. Its maple neck features a rosewood fretboard and has received a modern and comfortable 'C' profile. Playing this guitar is even more comfortable with its 22 jumbo-sized frets. Naturally, this Strat is also equipped with a vintage-style tremolo bridge and six extremely sturdy closed tuning mechanisms.
HSS configuration and Greasebucket tone circuit
The letters 'HSS' in the model's name represent humbucker and the two single-coil pickups. The middle and neck pickups are renowned Texas Special single-coils which produce that coveted Texas Blues sound, with its tight bass notes, sparkling mids and crystal clear trebles, thanks to their overwound Alnico 5 magnets. The bridge pickup is an Alnico 5 Fender Atomic humbucker and is excellently suited for rougher music styles such as rock and metal. The Fender American Special Stratocaster HSS has a master volume and two tone controls that filter out the trebles without adding extra bass. In other words, the bass won't automatically take over if you turn down the trebles, thanks to the Greasebucket circuitry.

Fijne gitaar, goed afgewerkt, lekker geluid. De elementen klinken zoals ze bedoeld zijn, met de humbucker achterin voor een stevig rythmgeluid. De schakelaar een tandje naar voren en je hebt het karakteristieke Fender kwaakgeluid (of iets wat daar op lijkt ; de originele Strat heeft natuurlijk een schuine brug single coil). Andere element combinaties leveren een hoop verschillende geluiden op, voor elk wat wils. De 'greasebucket'-circuits werken prima : hoog eruit, zonder dat het een zompige brij wordt. De tremolo staat inmiddels vlak tegen de body, met extra veren ; de stemvastheid zoals geleverd (in zwevende stand) is zozo, maar da's bekend van Strats. Eén klein minpuntje : er zat een grote kier tussen de hals en de body. Dit was met een schroevendraaier in een oogwenk opgelost, maar is wel een beetje slordig. Ik heb maar aangenomen dat het voor transport niet keihard vastgezet is omdat het vanwege temperatuur- en vochtigheidsschommelingen nog wat kan werken en er dan geen excessieve spanning op komt te staan. Waarom dan toch vijf sterren ? Omdat deze Stratocaster dikke pret is !
