The UREI 1176 FET compressor has more than earned its place in rock 'n' roll history, which means this modern recreation in 500 Series lunchbox form from BAE Audio certainly deserves a spot in your studio set-up. Despite its compact size, the BAE 500c module features everything you'd expect from a FET compressor: the input and output are fully tweakable; there's a bypass function for saturating the transformer; the Attack and Release controls are 'reversed' to match the original design; and the Ratio control not only offers you 4:1, 8:1, 12:1 and 20:1 ratios, but an extra 2:1 option for more subtle tasks. Also, you can take the 20:1 ratio one step further by entering the ABI (All Buttons In) territory, or activate the HPF side-chain function whenever you want to make sure the compressor doesn't respond as fiercely to lows.
