It's pretty likely that this man has played on at least one of your favourite ever albums, but he was first known for his work as part of Dream Theater; has since played in possibly hundreds of bands, and has worked with artists ranging from Avenged Sevenfold to Neal Morse. Such a varied and colourful CV must demand vast knowledge about what drum sound fits perfectly where. As such, Tama have let Mike loose on his very own range of signature snares. This particular example is the 14-inch Melody Master Bubinga.

The 14-inch diameter and 5.5-inch deep shell of the MP1455BU Melody Master is formed by nine plies of bubinga wood to provide fat, warm punch and a wide tuning range, making it the ideal main snare. A unique feature of every model included in the Mike Portnoy signature range is the three-way snare strainer that can be switched from tight, to a little more slack, to completely off, so that the tone can be even be shifted mid-song.
