Meinl's CL3HW claves are made of high-density African hardwood. They are bigger than the CL2 claves, making them the largest of Meinl's hardwood claves. Because they're bigger than average claves, they have a lower pitch, while they still produce a dry, cutting tone when you strike them together. The two claves are not identical: one of them is a smooth, cylindrical piece of wood and the other is hollowed out and has an indentation. By placing the larger clave face down in your hand you create a larger sound chamber. This results in a deep tone that comes close to the sound of a woodblock when you strike it with the smaller clave.
