Sabian's 14-inch XSR Monarch Hats looks like they've been around longer than you have and, while this understandably leads you to expect dark sound, that's not exactly the case. In fact, this hi-hat only sounds dark when played with your foot. When either open or closed, the sound maintains delicious balance and is actually surprisingly dry. Tip-based stick definition is pretty much bone-dry, leaving you more room for subtle accents and sonic nuance, while striking the XSR Monarch Hats with the shoulder of the stick adds more body to the tone without ever losing any definition. Open them up, and you'll get a nicely frayed sound with the right amount of bark and just enough bite.
