The Schlagwerk U78 Side Skin Udu is a unique addition to the range of Schlagwerk-made udus, since the skin that you'd usually find fitted to the base has been moved to the side. Because the skin now sits just next to the sound hole (where the pitch is controlled), you could potentially play this unique instrument with one hand. With your second hand free, you could even play a second udu or a different percussive instrument.
The Schlagwerk U78 Side Skin Udu: Pronounced 'OoDoo'
The Side Skin Udu is 35cm long and has a 25cm diameter. So, this is a pretty big jug - and that's exactly where the udu originates. In South-East Nigeria, the creative women of the Igbo tribe would accompany rituals by playing jugs. The sound hole (originally the pouring hole) is covered in a specific way to create varying pitch, and as such, these fully-fledged instruments require precise playing technique and have a uniquely versatile sound. They're also incredibly hard-wearing.
