D Akebono is the scale in which this Italian, handmade tongue drum is played. The Akebono scale originates in Japan and has no root note or tonica. As such, each note can actually be considered the root, giving the 18DAKE tongue drum its incredibly intuitive playability, since every note works with every other, and there is no fixed note that forms the centre. You literally can't do any wrong while playing this instrument. Tuned in D, G, A, Bb, D, Eb, G, A and Bb, this smart little instrument is played with the hands or with soft rubber mallets and, as this is a slightly larger tongue drum, it has an 18-inch diameter and 18cm height, and produces a similar sound to most (much more expensive) hand pans.
